The management of a large American trading network Target has come to an agreement with 47 states and the District of Columbia regarding a large-scale leakage of customer data in 2013.

Recall that in December 2013, at the height of the holiday shopping season, Target warned customers about the presence in its PoS-terminals of malicious software that stole data about 40 million payment cards. By the next month, the number of victims has increased to 70 million. The leak cost the head of Target Gregg Steinhafel (Gregg Steinhafel) work (Steinhafel served as the head of the company for 35 years).

On Tuesday, May 23, Target finally resolved the issue with all the victims of the leak. As reported by The Register, under the agreement, the company will pay compensation to state authorities, and not to the clients of the company.

The funds will go to the state budgets, and local authorities will decide how to deal with them.

The aggregate amount of compensation is $ 18 million - not that much, considering that over the past year the company has earned more than $ 20 billion. Simply put, $ 18 million is approximately as much as the company earns in 8 hours.

Target also allocated $ 10 million to recover damages to its customers and paid $ 40 million in compensation to banks and credit institutions.
