In the United States in January, a bill that should legalize the so-called "right to repair" of mobile devices, including the iPhone. If the law is passed, then smartphone manufacturers will be obliged to sell parts and repair kits to independent workshops and ordinary users. In addition, companies will have to spread out to the network for general access service and diagnostic manuals.

In February, Apple officially announced that it would interfere with the adoption of this law. The company claims that attempts by customers to repair their own smartphones and tablets themselves can lead to further ignition of the batteries.

Today, the publication of Motherboard published the results of the investigation, according to which Apple and several other companies are actively trying not to skip this law. In particular, from January to April, a number of large American corporations spent more than $ 350,000 lobbying their interests on this issue.

Producers oppose the adoption of the "Fair repair law". The list includes Apple, Verizon, Toyota, Lexmark, Caterpillar, Asurion, Medtronic and others.. For comparison, the coalition, representing the interests of independent repair shops for the same period, spent about $ 5,000 lobbying its interests.

The bill is aimed at eliminating the model of "authorized service centers", which is adhered to by most manufacturers. At the same initiators of the project argue that such centers set inflated prices for repairs. And ordinary workshops have to order accessories in China or take parts of failed equipment in order to compete with authorized centers.

The bill is promoted by the lobbying company Repair. Org, which represents the interests of independent repair shops.
