Universal Secure Registry (USR) sued Apple, accusing the company of infringing patents related to the payment system Apple Pay. The plaintiff claims that the iPhone maker has violated patents for electronic payment technology and the principles of authentication in its systems.

The founder of USR Kenneth Weiss claims that the technology of its development underlies Apple Pay. According to him, patents cover all three key elements of the "apple" payment service.

Although it is not uncommon today, when several companies have services using the same technology, Weiss says that Apple and Visa knew about its development four years before the launch of the payment service. According to the plaintiff, since 2014, Apple's servers and the VisaNet payment network, including Visa Token Service, have processed billions of Apple Pay transactions in the US.

According to the statement of claim, in 2010 Weiss offered Apple and Visa cooperation. During the meeting, the developer conducted a presentation of his technology, where all participants signed a non-disclosure agreement. However, the negotiations did not end with anything.

However, Weiss claims that in early January 2013, Visa allocated about a thousand people to the project Apple Pay, which was created on the basis of its developments.

One might think that Weiss and his company are ordinary patent trolls, but this is not so. The document, for example, states that more than 150 million people around the world rely on computer security and identification systems, such as SecurID tokens, developed exactly by Weiss.

Apple declined to comment on the trial with Universal Secure Registry.
