Now each device with data transfer capability has at least one wireless connection module. If in smartphones, tablets and computers this is absolutely normal, then for gadgets in the field of smart home and the Internet of things creates a lot of inconvenience. Radio modules always consume a lot of energy and manufacturers have to increase the size of devices in order to install a battery of suitable size and capacity.

Disney Research specialists have developed a technology that solves the problem of power consumption of wireless connection modules and allows the use of ambient radio waves for data transmission. In this case, sensors with very low power consumption are used to reflect radio waves from virtually any source, whether it's a mobile operator's tower, a home router or a smartphone. A similar approach uses RFID tags, but in the development of Disney Research, all available signal sources are used at once, which allowed to transfer data in the laboratory to a distance of 50 meters without using energy-consuming modules in the device.

Disney Research technology is not applicable to devices such as smartphones, tablets, smart watches and other consumer electronics (all these gadgets participate in the signaling chain), and the development can not be used in remote areas where there are few devices that transmit data wirelessly.

In terms of practical applications, Disney Research technology will be most useful in smart home devices, smart cities and other industries where the largest reduction in the size and energy consumption of various sensors, their long-term use without replacement and charging of batteries.

Thanks to Disney Research, new devices may appear that previously could not be released because of the size or power requirements, and in addition, a large number of outdoor electronics that work exclusively on solar energy can be created.
