The European Space Agency (ESA) presented a crack growth interferogram in the Larsen C glacier obtained using the Sentinel-1 radar data. The video was posted on the agency's YouTube channel.
As the researchers note, the radar data allow them to monitor the growth of the crack, since it is not always noticeable on satellite images. At the moment the length of the crack is 175 kilometers, and it continues to grow. After the ice floe breaks away from the glacier, it will become one of the largest icebergs ever described.
The exact moment when the ice floe separates from the glacier can not be determined.
In November 2015, in Greenland, a glacier broke, the melting of which can raise the level of the world's ocean by 50 centimeters. In other regions of Greenland, there are also large-scale melting of glaciers.
If the ice melts in Greenland, this will lead to an increase in the world ocean level by six meters.
Ukrainian scientists said that the ozone hole increases the wall, which protects Antarctica from the air from warm latitudes. Its disappearance may lead to the fact that warming in Antarctica will go even faster.
