Company Zscaler has found in the Google Play Store spyware application family SMSVova. It was called System Update and lasted three years in the store. The application was posted in 2014 and since then it has been downloaded by over a million users.

In the description of the application it was said that it updates and activates specialized functions related to the location, and as screenshots there were blank pages. The reviews were mostly negative, as users noticed that the application is behaving suspiciously: nothing does and disappears from the screen when it first starts up after an error message. In reality, this application spied on the user.

It ran in the background its own Android-service and BroadcastReceiver, stored the location of the smartphone in Shared Preferences and sent them to intruders. Hackers could also see incoming SMS messages and send commands to devices, including changing the password from the device.

Since this application has not been updated since 2014, it was unlikely to be used to harm users. Most likely, the hackers just checking how to get around Google and anti-virus filters bring viral app from the Play Store.
