According to Bloomberg, Apple has assembled a team that will create a system to provide access to the Internet through space-launched satellites. This team was joined by John Fenwick, who previously worked on similar technologies at Google, as well as his colleague Michael Trela. Apple's new project was led by Greg Duffy, co-founder of Dropcam, who left his start-up in 2015 almost immediately after he was absorbed by Google's Nest company.

John Fenwick founded SkyBox Imaging, which was acquired by Google in 2014.

In early 2017, Google sold it to Planet Labs. SkyBox Imaging is developing satellite systems.

In March 2017, telemarketing consultant Tim Farrar wrote that Apple is funding Boeing's tests to launch satellites designed to provide Internet access. Earlier there were rumors that Apple is developing a self-propelled vehicle. He will need constant access to the Internet, and Apple, in all likelihood, will provide it independently using his own satellite system.
