Scientists are embarrassed by an increase in the number of large white sharks with an enlarged brain thrown out on the Atlantic beach. Scientists from Canada and the United States are trying to find out what causes inflammation from these predators.

This sea anomaly is concerned with researchers. Indeed, until August 2023, experts of the organization Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative (CWHC), studying the problems of wildlife health, have not met a dead white shark for 30 years, Dailymail writes.

The first white shark, released to the island of Prince Edward, was, at first glance, without signs of injury, which puzzled experts. However, scientists recognized the cause of the death of meningoencephalitis - inflammation of the brain tissue, which over time violates normal cognitive functions.

After this incident, four more dead large white sharks were thrown into the beaches of the Atlantic coast of Canada. And later a similar phenomenon was seen in the United States, off the coast of Massachusetts.

Dr. Megan Jones, a veterinary pathologist and the regional director of CWHC, said that cases of bacterial infections causing brain inflammation were registered in the past. However, these infections were easier to identify.

Jones entered a group of scientists who intend to find out whether this type of shark is now faced with a new unknown threat. " We need to know more what it is, ”the doctor noted.

Megan Jones said that if the shark brain is squeezed, she will no longer be able to eat or can get lost and get stuck in shallow water, throwing herself ashore.

Also, factors such as climate change have led to the fact that the waters of the Atlantic became warmer, which pushes predators to the north.

Compared to other marine wild animals, such as whales and dolphins, there are still many unknown sharks about the sharks, and their studies are not sufficiently funded, experts say.

According to biologists, around the world, large white sharks are included in the list of vulnerable, and their number is steadily reduced. According to researchers, in the wild, from 50,000 to 3500 individuals remained.
