Irish scientists have discovered an abnormal pathology of the human body that becomes fatal when infected with coronavirus, said Professor James O'Donnell, head of the Irish Center for Vascular Biology in Dublin. This is stated in the scientific journal Eurekalert.

The article provides a joint study of the Irish Center for Vascular Biology, the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland and St. James's Hospital. According to its results, abnormal blood coagulation was observed in patients with severe COVID-19, which leads to the appearance of microtubuses in the lungs.

So, scientists in the course of the study revealed hundreds of blood clots throughout the lung, which is not observed with other types of pulmonary infection.

“Our new findings indicate that COVID-19 is associated with a unique type of blood coagulation disorder, which is mainly concentrated in the lungs and which undoubtedly contributes to the high mortality rate observed in patients with COVID-19,” O'Donnell noted.

O'Donnell added that more research is needed to find out if various blood thinning methods can reduce the risk of clot formation..
