Some professions of future fathers may have a significant impact on the health of their children, especially on the likelihood of congenital diseases and malformations. A recent study conducted by a group of scientists from the USA and the Netherlands revealed an interesting connection between the type of father’s profession and the risk of various diseases in children. The head of the study, Andrew Olshen from the University of North Carolina, and his colleagues analyzed data about 14 thousand newborns, studying their health and working conditions of their fathers.

The study examined the period from 1997 to 2004, and scientists used both archival medical records and the results of the phone polls to collect data to collect data.. Women asked questions about the professions of their husbands before conception, which allowed us to establish which working conditions could affect the health of future children. As a result, it was found that certain professions are associated with an increased risk of various congenital diseases.

About 10,000 children from the group under study were born with various malformations, which included 60 types of diseases. Researchers divided the fathers into 63 groups, depending on their professions and the risk of harmful factors, such as chemicals, radiation and other dangers at the workplace. It is noteworthy that almost a third of professions was not associated with high risk to children's health, including employees such as doctors, architects, fishermen and drivers.

However, several professions were directly related to the increased risk of developing vices. So, for children of photographers and workers of photo studios, a high frequency of eyes of the eyes, such as cataracts and glaucoma, was observed. Landscaping designers and gardeners more often found vices of intestinal development in newborns. In addition, artists and designers were also at risk for many diseases, including pathologies of the eyes, ears and digestive organs.

Another important conclusion of the study concerns workers related to the chemical and oil and gas industry, as well as office employees, who also had an increased risk of children with congenital vices. Problems were also identified among the descendants of hairdressers, cosmetologists, as well as people working on sawmills, printing houses and food industries.

Thus, the study emphasizes the importance of taking into account the profession of a father when planning a family, especially if the work is related to potential hazards for health. Earlier, scientists have already concluded that later paternity may have some advantages for the health of the offspring, which is associated with genetic mechanisms and life expectancy, but the father’s profession remains a significant factor in the development of children's health.
