University employees, examining the interaction of alcohol with various drugs, came to the conclusion that alcohol can significantly accelerate the absorption of medicines, increasing their concentration in the blood. This phenomenon is observed for both prescription and over -the -counter drugs. Kristel Bergstrom, who conducted laboratory experiments, noted that alcohol changes the work of enzymes and other substances in the body, which, in turn, affects the metabolism of drugs.

One example of this process is the effect of alcohol on the dissolution of drugs in the gastrointestinal tract. Some drugs can be poorly dissolved without alcohol, and with its presence their solubility increases. Studies have shown that about 60% of 22 of the tested drugs dissolved faster in conditions of ethanol, which increases their concentration in the body.

At the same time, not all drugs react equally to alcohol. Particularly influenced by its effects with an acidic reaction, such as warfarin, which is used to thin the blood, as well as tamoxifen used in the treatment of cancer, and, which is known as a means of inflammation and pain. These drugs can interact with alcohol so that the effect of them will not only be stronger, but also potentially more dangerous for the body.

It is important to understand that the interaction of alcohol with drugs does not always manifest itself immediately. Some side effects can be unobvious and develop gradually, which makes it difficult to diagnose.
