How our memory works: secrets of memorization

Every day we are faced with situations where we need to remember information: for study, work or personal - someone’s phone number or meeting time. How to learn to memorize effectively and for a long time?

There are many memorization techniques, in addition, each of us has our own techniques, already familiar and convenient, suggested by our own experience: someone takes notes, someone visualizes or uses associations. But all these techniques are based on the same principles.. These are the basic principles of how memory works.. Their awareness can significantly increase efficiency and create your own memorization recipes. There are four such principles.

Color is much easier to remember than black and white.. Everything is clear here. Color attracts our attention and holds it.. It takes more time to process such information than gray text or black and white photographs, so it is remembered better.

Actually, it is with the help of photographs that this principle is explored.. In Germany in 2009, an experiment was conducted: participants were shown a hundred landscape photographs (forests, mountains, lakes, rivers). Of these, 50 were in color and 50 were in black and white.. Then another hundred similar photos were added to this hundred, among which half were also black and white, and half were color. It turned out that the experiment participants remembered almost all color photos and accurately recognized which ones they had already seen. But there were many doubts regarding black and white, many of them could not be remembered.

Things that move are much easier to remember than things that don't move.. If a group of people are standing and suddenly one person starts moving towards you, this will also attract attention. Yes, just in case. And this is the reason that you will remember this particular person better than those who remained in place.

All living things react to movement. The way we perceive moving information is a legacy from our ancestors, who could not see stationary objects at all.

What screams is better remembered than what is silent. It's not so much about screaming as it is about sound.. A loud sound is what you need to react to. Otherwise, something not very pleasant may happen.

It's not just about the volume though. The presence or absence of sound can do strange things to our perception that we would never have guessed.. In particular, if a person eats and at that moment listens to the sounds of other food, this can even lead to a loss of taste.. That is, if you are given a marshmallow and at the same time turn on the sound of someone crunching a fresh apple, then, most likely, it will seem to you that you are clearly not eating marshmallows.

Rough, even something vulgar is easier to remember than something that is within the framework of ethics. This principle of memory most influences our ability to remember, which is why it is often used in advertising or propaganda.. The effect of this principle is well known to those who have children: they remember words that are replaced in the text with the symbols “%#@” automatically and forever, which cannot be said about the multiplication table.

So it turns out: in order to remember something well, you need to colorize this information, add movement and sound to it. Thanks to this, even the most boring texts, formulas or numbers can be turned into interesting and fascinating information that attracts attention for a long time, and therefore is better remembered.

This happens because colors, sounds, movements can evoke such emotions, which is precisely the reason that our memory imprints something on itself.. It doesn’t matter what emotions it was - scary or funny. The main thing is that they are very strong. For example, the events that took place on the Maidan or February 24, 2022 are very clearly imprinted in our memory - even those who were not directly involved will still remember these days. And sometimes in very small details. Because this is how our attention and memory work. The danger may not directly threaten me, but I am aware of it, and now all the senses seem to multiply their capabilities several times. This happens without our will - the body does everything to prepare for something difficult and scary. At such moments it is difficult to think, but it is easy to notice.

It’s not only terrible things that bring a person into such a state. A good film that you watched with friends in the cinema is also a set of emotions. They are thoughtfully and purposefully evoked in you through images, words, music, story.. This is why we remember movies well.

But in our life there is also information, original, sometimes emotional, but at the same time we don’t remember it at all. These are our dreams. Probably, any of us have encountered this: I just woke up and still know what I saw that night. And within a second the memory evaporates. Why? After all, a dream is often full of all the signs of information that should be imprinted in a person’s memory. If what we saw in a dream happened to us in real life, we definitely would not forget it.

The fact that we forget dreams is a very good ability of our brain to draw a clear line between dreams and reality and forget what is not related to real life. In addition, it is natural to forget a dream. This is a normal and even phenomenal habit of our memory - to immediately forget information. Why phenomenal? Because if we really remembered everything, then one can only imagine how clogged our memory would be with things we don’t need at all: the sounds of every car in a huge traffic jam, advertising slogans calling out to us from billboards, thousands of price tags in a supermarket..

So is it possible to consciously remember dreams Yes. Those who want to train themselves to remember dreams should always keep a pen and paper near their bed.. And as soon as you wake up, immediately write down what remains in your memory from your dream. Can't remember clearly? Then remember any detail - an object or person you just saw, or any smell. The amount of what you remember doesn't matter to begin with.. The main thing is to start remembering. And write it down. This trains your memory, and I can imagine that somewhere between the third and fifth time you will not have enough paper to write down your dreams.

Writing on paper requires much more serious work from us and our heads than just remembering. By making a record, we can at the same time analyze the information, compare it and evaluate it. This is one of the main reasons why people who constantly write something down can do much more in terms of intellectual work..

And this applies not only to dreams. Recording any information several times improves how we remember and remember this information in the future.

Memory is not only a mechanism for storing information, but also a way to experience and capture the moments that define us. Use its potential, add color, movement and sounds to your everyday life and you will see how even everyday things can become unforgettable. And most importantly, remember that each of us is capable of making our memory stronger, more vivid and more effective..
