People with blood types 2, 3 and 4 are at greater risk of heart disease than people with blood types 1, says a team of researchers led by Tessa Cole of the University Medical Center Groningen in the Netherlands.. The study was presented in Paris at the annual meeting of the members of the European Society of Cardiology.

Cole and her team conducted a meta-analysis of literature on cardiovascular disease, including heart attack and heart failure, and blood types.. The data included information on more than 1.3 million adults.

The group identified 771,113 people with non-A blood type and 519,743 people with A blood type. Among people with non-A blood types, 1.5% (11,437) had a coronary event or syndrome—compared to 1.4% (7,220) of people with A blood types. In the analysis of common cardiovascular complications, scientists identified 708,276 people with non-A blood type and 476,868 people with A blood type.. Among people with a non-A blood type, 2.5% (17,449) had a cardiovascular event compared to 2.3% (10,916) with a blood type.

“We have demonstrated that non-blood types are associated with a 9% increased risk of coronary syndrome and a 9% increased risk of cardiovascular disease, especially myocardial infarction,” Cole comments..

Scientists note that people with non-blood type I have a higher concentration of a protein responsible for blood clotting called von Willebrand factor - previous work has shown its connection with the formation of blood clots.. In addition, people with blood types other than type 1, especially those with type 2, tend to have higher cholesterol levels, a known risk factor..
