Scientists from the Yale School of Medicine have found a link between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and atrial fibrillation: people suffering from stress disorder are more likely to experience arrhythmias.

Atrial fibrillation is a dangerous heart rhythm disorder that increases the risk of stroke, type 2 diabetes, obesity, hypertension, and sleep apnea.

The researchers analyzed data from more than a million veterans who did not suffer from arrhythmia at the time the study began..

Volunteers were followed for an average of approximately 5 years, during which time 2,500 of them were diagnosed with atrial fibrillation. The experts took into account all the factors that could affect the results, and came to the conclusion that people suffering from stress disorders are more likely to experience arrhythmias, but this relationship is unlikely to be causal..

Experts believe that early detection and treatment of PTSD will reduce the risk of arrhythmia.

The study has not yet been published in scientific journals.
