Reduced physical activity due to COVID-19 On March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization declared the start of a pandemic of a new coronavirus infection COVID-19. In order to stop the spread of infection, a quarantine or self-isolation regime was introduced around the world.. And, of course, social distancing, travel bans, the cancellation of sports and other public events, as well as changes in work and school hours have affected the daily life of Russians..

The main restrictions in Russia were introduced from March 28, 2020. Depending on the epidemiological situation in the regions, restrictions of various severity were introduced, which also concerned outdoor sports. But indoor sports have been restricted across the country..

How restrictions affected the way of life of the population?

In the spring of 2020, experts from the National Medical Research Center for Therapy and Preventive Medicine conducted an online survey on physical activity during COVID-19 restrictions among 2540 respondents from 62 regions of the country. They shared information about their physical activity before and during the pandemic, from how many minutes a day they devote to activities of varying intensity, walking, gymnastics and muscle strengthening exercises. The average age of the respondents was 37.6±13.4 years. Among the women who took part in the survey were 86%.

The WHO recommendations for physical activity for health require more than 150 minutes of moderate physical activity per week or more than 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity physical activity per week, or a combination of moderate and vigorous physical activity. At the same time, muscle strengthening exercises should be carried out more than 2 days a week..

According to the results of the survey, the following data was obtained: the proportion of participants who followed the recommendations for any type of physical activity decreased from 68% to 49%. Importantly, the number of days of participating in strength training also decreased significantly, as did the proportion of those who followed the recommendation for strength training on 2 or more days per week (from 53% to 45%).

Thus, the introduction of restrictive measures has led to a decrease in all types of physical activity.. At the same time, adherence to the self-isolation regime and the closure of fitness clubs had a greater impact on the decrease in physical activity, while access to the green zone, the use of online resources and home exercise equipment contributed to its smaller decrease..

At the same time, it is important to take into account the current situation in a particular subject of the Russian Federation and the existing restrictions.

Additionally, the study identified factors that affect the degree of compliance with the WHO global recommendations on physical activity - this is living in a city or a private house, having a dog, using a home exercise machine. Modern Internet technologies and mobile applications play an important role in increasing physical activity, if, of course, the participants follow their recommendations..
