Painful menstruation: normal or not?

Gynecologist Daria Dyachenko spoke about what symptoms during menstruation are normal, and which ones you should pay attention to.

Many women experience discomfort during menstruation: pain in the lower abdomen or in the lumbar region. This is the result of intense contraction of the uterus.

“During the monthly cycle, endometrial clots accumulate in the uterus. This is the tissue that covers the inside of the uterus.. When the muscles of the uterus begin to contract under the influence of prostaglandin hormones, they seem to push the endometrium outward, freeing the uterine cavity, ”the doctor explains the cause of the pain.

The more intensely the muscles contract, the more acute the pain syndrome.. That is, pain in this case is not a symptom of any disease or malfunction in the female body.. It's a physiological process. But you should pay attention to the intensity and duration of painful sensations.

Pain can occur not only during menstruation, but also a few days before the onset of menstruation. More often this problem is faced by young girls under the age of 18. The reason is the jump in sex hormones.

Menstruation can be much more painful in too thin girls and women - due to the poorly developed muscular skeleton of the uterus.

Psycho-emotional factors can also be the cause of painful periods.. Stress significantly reduces the pain threshold, respectively, menstruation is more difficult to endure, pain is felt more strongly..

The doctor notes that pain during menstruation is normal, but on a 10-point scale, they should not exceed 7 points. If the pain is so severe that you are forced to break your usual lifestyle, you should consult a doctor.
