Red Meat Linked to Increased Risk of Hypertension A Penn State College of Medicine study shows a link between a diet high in red and processed meat, food insecurity and an increased risk of high blood pressure (hypertension). Red and processed meats are high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium, which can lead to hypertension and other forms of cardiovascular disease (CVD).

The researchers analyzed data from 31,314 American adults who participated in the National Health and Nutrition Survey from 2003 to 2016.. Almost half of the respondents (48.5%) suffered from high blood pressure. People answered questions about whether they had problems accessing food during the past year.

Based on the responses, households were divided into four groups depending on food security. The study showed that about 18% of participants experience food shortages. Participants, regardless of food insecurity, who recorded the highest consumption of red meat had a 29-39% greater risk of hypertension, the researchers said.. People who faced food insecurity and ate the most processed meat were 36-50% more likely to experience hypertension.
