Research has shown that fidaxomicin, an antibiotic commonly used to treat intestinal infections, prevents the growth of resistant strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTb) that cause tuberculosis in the laboratory.

A study published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology found that fidaxomicin is more effective than existing tuberculosis (TB) drugs in preventing the growth of bacteria that cause it.

Researchers compared the activity of fidaxomicin and rifampicin, an antibiotic currently used to treat tuberculosis, against 72 different MTb strains. Of these, 34 were resistant to multiple antibiotics. They found that fidaxomicin could prevent the growth of all 72 strains at lower doses than rifampicin. Both drugs tested work in a similar way and are part of a group of antibiotics known as RNAP inhibitors..
