An international team of scientists has developed biocompatible protocells that generate nitric oxide to help dilate blood vessels. The technology was presented in the framework of the journal Nature Chemistry.

Special coating for protocells helps to increase biocompatibility and increase circulation time. Importantly, the team identified an enzyme within protocells that, in the presence of glucose, produced hydrogen peroxide..

Then, the decomposition of the hydroxyurea molecule to gaseous nitrogen oxide took place.

When small pieces of blood vessels are placed inside or injected into the carotid artery, the protocells produced enough nitric oxide to initiate the biochemical pathways responsible for vasodilation.

Although the new approach is at a very early stage of development, it could have significant advantages in biomedicine, cell diagnostics and bioengineering..
