Russia sends virologists and doctors to Italy

Russia on Sunday sent the first of nine military aircraft, which were supposed to deliver to Italy a total of 100 virus experts and doctors to deal with the coronavirus pandemic.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said the assistance mission was agreed upon by President Vladimir Putin and Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

The Ministry of Transport stated that military transport aircraft arrived at the airport near Moscow overnight, and eight medical teams were ready to fly with mobile disinfectant aerosols and medical equipment.

According to the ministry, the first plane took off on Sunday and was supposed to land at the military airport of Pratica di Mare outside of Rome.



The plan of the aircraft is about 100 people, including specialists in viruses and epidemics from the Ministry of Defense who have “significant international experience in combating epidemics”.

The ministry said experts had previously been involved in the fight against Ebola, African swine fever and anthrax outbreaks..

To date, 306 cases of coronavirus have been registered in Russia. The death toll in Italy on Saturday reached 4825 people.

Putin visited Italy last July and often talked about his long-standing friendship with former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi.
