Researchers from the Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology have created a method for the diagnosis of schizophrenia by the content of certain marker compounds in the blood plasma, reports Filipp Khaitovich, Head of Research, Professor Skolteha.
The method is based on a comprehensive study of human blood plasma, which takes into account the content and number of chemical compounds that show the risks of developing schizophrenia in a patient.
The authors found more than fifty of these markers, finding a connection between the composition of the plasma and metabolic changes in the brain that develop due to the appearance of a psychological deviation.
This method gives an accuracy of detection of schizophrenia of the order of 95-97 percent, says Khaitovich, adding that the result of the laboratory analysis coincides with the medical diagnosis.
Recall that schizophrenia is a cognitive disorder that a physician establishes based on the symptoms that stand out in the patient’s behavior.. The approach of specialists from Skoltech makes it possible to identify traces of schizophrenia even in those who have undergone therapy and are no longer taking drugs.
