Biotechnology Corporation Genentech spoke about a new experimental antibiotic - G0775. Its main task is to combat gram-negative bacteria, according to "Naked Science". It is known that Gram-positive bacteria have a single-layered cell membrane. It contains peptidoglycan - a heteropolymer that is important in the bacterial cell wall. Many antibiotics, including penicillin, inhibit peptidoglycan synthesis, thereby causing cell death.

In turn, gram-negative bacteria differ markedly - here the cell membrane is locked between two loose layers. On the outside, it is covered by an additional lipopolysaccharide layer, because of which the path to the membrane is closed. Finally, experts came up with how to circumvent this protection.

They rely on arylomycins.

These molecules inhibit the activity of an important bacterial signal peptidase of the first type - a new target for antibiotic therapy. This approach made it possible to overcome even persistent pathogens. Peptidase is an enzyme that enhances the cleavage of terminal amino acids from protein molecules. Specialists optimized arylomycins and received G0775. This molecule could easily penetrate the outer membrane of the bacterium.
