Deodorants, perfumes, shampoos and other cosmetic and hygienic products pollute the air no less than the exhaust of cars or cigarette smoke, according to an article published in the journal Science.
"Typically, gasoline is stored in completely sealed containers, and its volatiles are usually burned in engine engines. On the other hand, the same substances are used in solvents and personal care products for the simple reason that they evaporate well. People like the scents of such products, but for some reason no one smells gasoline, "says Jessica Gilman of the US Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Many large cities in developed and some developing countries (for example, in China) are constantly experiencing problems associated with smog and high levels of air pollution. The main source of this pollution are cars and industrial enterprises, in the emissions of which there are many carcinogens, toxic aerosols and other dangerous substances.
Gilman and her colleagues found that car exhausts are not the only and not even the main air pollutant. To this conclusion they came, having studied the content of carcinogens and other harmful molecules in the air of apartments and on the streets of various cities of America.
As the scientists note, they are not interested in the most common inorganic pollutants such as sulfur dioxide or nitric acid vapors, and volatile organic substances that can cause cancer and serious hormonal disorders.
