The use of citrus should be regular, even in the format "once a week". Scientists were able to make sure that the substances contained in them significantly improve the condition of the organs of the vision system and protect against the development in it of many problems associated with the processes of age-related degeneration.

Researchers from the University of Sydney (Astralia) have reported that substances that make up the pulp and peel of oranges are extremely useful for maintaining a healthy retina in which, as people age, negative changes often occur.

"Even with the use of oranges and citrus only once a week, the health of the eyes is significantly improved. Eating at least one orange a day can reduce the chance of partial or complete degeneration of the retina at once by 60%, "the researchers say in the publication of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

A scientific project of Australian specialists tracked changes in the state of vision in older and young people from Sydney and other cities in Australia, whose diet included a large number of antioxidant substances of flavonoids from various food sources. These observations were initiated after during the experiments with animals the researchers noticed: the antioxidants contained in oranges and citruses have a very beneficial effect on the cellular structure of the retina.

In studies with people it was confirmed: citrus fruits do indeed benefit the eyesight.

Although flavonoids are found in other foods, obtained from oranges and other citrus fruits were much more effective in this regard. For example, flavonoids from tea, wine or apples reduced the risk of deterioration of the retina by only 25-30%.

According to experts, degeneration of the retina is a common age violation, hitting every seventh elderly person. To protect themselves from this ailment, they believe, regularly eating oranges and other citrus fruits is especially important in youth.
