Singing helps birth-giving women overcome postnatal depression, British scientists report. The new study says that newly minted mothers who fight with mild symptoms of a depressive disorder recover much faster if they regularly sing. Although experts do not say why this is the case, previous work shows that singing helps people with depression, allowing them to express their emotions and relax.

Researchers analyzed 130 women during the first 40 weeks of motherhood. Participants were divided into three groups - one group of women spent 10 weeks singing, the second group of women attended creative classes, and the third group received standard care for postpartum depression.

Women, singing, listened and studied new songs, and also created songs about motherhood. It was found that this group of women was the fastest way to get rid of the depressive disorder after childbirth.

"Postpartum depression is debilitating for mothers and their families, but new evidence shows that singing can help women accelerate recovery at one of the most vulnerable periods of their lives," says Dr. Rosie Perkins.
