The intake of these pain killers increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in patients with arthritis, scientists at the University of British Columbia. According to their findings, a quarter of these patients have an increased risk of getting cardiac disease due to the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). The specialists analyzed data of almost 31 000 patients, a quarter of them diagnosed osteoarthritis. They found that taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs with patients with arthritis increased their likelihood of suffering from cardiac abnormalities and stroke.

"Those who took aspirin and ibuprofen had a 23% higher risk of developing heart disease in general, while the risk of heart failure was increased by 43%, ischemic illness by 17%, and the risk of stroke - by 14%," ascertained the authors of the work.

Researchers note that the dependence established by them must necessarily be taken into account by physicians, since nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are often prescribed in arthritis as a means of treating chronic pain.
