Caffeine in large quantities contributes to losing weight

Caffeine reduces the body weight of mice by suppressing appetite and increasing energy expenditure on metabolism, Chinese scientists have proved. They believe that their conclusions are valid for people.

Scientists have followed the neural pathways that are involved in suppressing appetite when caffeine enters the body. To do this, experts examined the activity of receptors located in the hypothalamus, which are blocked by the psychostimulant contained in the coffee.



Experts found that caffeine promotes the release of oxytocin, a potent regulator of energy metabolism.

The authors note that in experiments rodents were administered extremely high doses of caffeine (60 milligrams per kilogram of body weight), which for humans are equivalent to 24-36 cups of coffee per day, whereas on the day it is recommended to consume no more than 400 milligrams of this stimulant.

The study is published in the journal Nature Communications.
