A prolonged sleep on weekends can compensate for lack of sleep on weekdays, reducing the risk of premature death. To this conclusion came a group of scientists from the University of Stockholm.

The results of their study are published in Journal Sleep Research.

The study involved over 38,000 adults who reported sleep duration on weekends and workdays.

Scientists analyzed these data for 13 years, simultaneously noting other indicators - body mass index, physical activity, bad habits and t.

It turned out that in people under 65 who slept less than five hours a day, the risk of premature death increased by 65 percent compared to those who slept for six to seven hours. However, those volunteers who slept at the weekend, the indicators were leveled. Too long sleep (more than nine hours) was not useful and also increased the risk of premature death.
