It turns out that lack of vitamin D is dangerous not only for bones. Scientists from the National Institutes of Health of the United States found that women who plan to become pregnant after a miscarriage are more likely to conceive and give birth normally if their body has enough vitamin D, reports The Deccan Chronicle.

Experts analyzed data of approximately 1,200 women. The level of vitamin D in the blood of participants was measured before conception and at the 8th week of pregnancy. The deficiency of the vitamin was considered to be below 30 nanograms per milliliter of blood. In women with normal vitamin D concentrations, the probability of pregnancy was 10% higher, and the probability of a live birth is 15% higher than that of participants with vitamin deficiency.

An increase in the vitamin D concentration for every 10 nanograms per milliliter in pregnant women was associated with a 12 percent reduction in the risk of miscarriage.. The concentration of vitamin D at the 8th week of pregnancy did not affect the probability of miscarriage. The authors of the study noted that the identified relationship is not causal. According to scientists, further research is needed.
