After a busy week, many people find it difficult not to succumb to temptation and not to lie in bed all weekend. Nevertheless, a growing amount of research indicates that a prolonged sleep on weekends can cause so-called social jetlag, expressed in the desynchronization of biorhythms of a person with a sleep regimen and manifested in worsening of health, depressed mood, increased drowsiness and fatigue. According to experts, social jetlag arises when the internal clock of the body does not correspond to the schedule of a person's sleep.

American scientists from Northeastern University of Illinois decided to find out how much sleep at the weekend leads to the fact that social jetlag becomes a problem. Surprisingly, increasing the duration of sleep in the weekend for only a couple of hours can adversely affect health, experts say.

The data obtained show that if the average sleep point is shifted by more than an hour, a person may be at increased risk. To reach such conclusions, the scientists examined 15,000 students. Only 40% of the participants had a normal synchronization between their own biorhythms and the sleep schedule, while 60% suffered from social javelag.

According to statistics, about a third of people do not receive the recommended amount of sleep, which is 7-8 hours a day.

Deprivation of sleep can reduce productivity throughout the day and lead to long-term health problems, such as diabetes, obesity and even heart disease..

Previous studies have shown that people whose biological clocks are not synchronized with work and social graphs are more likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol and suffer from stress. A study conducted by the University of Arizona in 2017 revealed that every hour of social jostlag increases the likelihood of developing heart disease by 11%.
