According to the review of medical literature, the "low-glycemic" diet was recognized as the most effective of all diets aimed at reducing weight and cholesterol levels.

Glycemic index (GI) shows how strongly the product affects the blood glucose level. Products with a high glycemic index (white bread, sweets and t. ) cause a sharp increase in glucose level, and food with a low glycemic index contains a lot of fiber, complex carbohydrates (eg, vegetables, whole grains), so it is digested slowly and contributes to the gradual intake of glucose into the blood.

Elizabeth Elliott (Australia) and her colleagues evaluated the results of six studies, which involved 202 people. All studies compared "low-glycemic" and other types of diets. Participants in the studies followed a diet of five weeks to six months.



On average, study participants who adhered to the "low-glycemic" diet lost 1 kilogram more than those who used other diets. Nutrition in the glycemic index also influenced the lipid profile (total cholesterol, low density lipoproteins).

The authors of the review note that a "low-glycemic" diet is fairly easy to follow. Products with low GI can be eaten in any quantity, that is, the quality of life is higher than when strictly restricting the amount of food diets.
