For the first time, American experts managed to establish that the fat from pistachios is not completely absorbed by our body.
The results of an analysis by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture show that pistachios actually contain fewer calories than originally thought and are among the lowest calorie nuts with 160 calories per 30 gram serving.
After a new recalculation, the energy value of a handful of pistachios was 5.9% less than in the previous calculations.
Previously it was assumed that the fat from the nuts is poorly absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract.
The new data prove that fats from pistachios are not fully digested or absorbed by the body, as a result of which their energy value is reduced. The doctors managed to find out that healthy adults, who regularly receive pistachios, also protect their hearts thanks to nuts. Moreover, contrary to the contrary popular belief, pistachios help maintain a normal body mass index, without causing weight gain at all. Pistachios also serve as a good source of fiber and protein, compared to almonds, walnuts and cashews.
