Cholecystitis is a fairly common disease, so you should know about it as much as possible. It is necessary to try to avoid its development, to know its symptoms, to know why it develops and what treatment is necessary if cholecystitis already exists.

What is cholecystitis? Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder (a small organ located near the liver), which plays an important role in digesting food. As a rule, a fluid called bile leaves the gallbladder, advancing towards the small intestine. If the bile ducts are blocked, bile accumulates in the gallbladder, causing swelling and pain, possibly an infection.

What causes cholecystitis?.

Cholecystitis can develop due to the formation of gallstones. Usually this leads to stagnation of bile and to infection with intestinal microflora. Inflammations that periodically occur and pass, lead to a change in the wall of the gallbladder and can cause a chronic inflammatory process (chronic calculous cholecystitis). Infections or injuries (eg, obtained in a car accident) can also cause cholecystitis.

Acute cholecystitis is manifested primarily in people who undergo intensive therapy. The main signs of acute cholecystitis are paroxysmal pain in the right side of the abdomen, radiating to the right shoulder, scapula; nausea and vomiting; chills and fever; jaundice and itching of the skin are possible. A dangerous complication of acute cholecystitis can be peritonitis. In cases of acute cholecystitis, stones in the gallbladder are not formed, but it can be a complication of other serious illnesses, such as HIV or diabetes.
