A new study found that vitamin B3 (nicotinic acid) slows brain damage in mice with dementia.

A new method for treating Alzheimer's disease is reported by the American journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Previously, vitamin B3 was already offered for alternative treatment of Alzheimer's disease. A 2008 study showed that nicotinic acid (aka nicotinamide, niacin) reverses memory impairments in rodents associated with dementia.

The authors of the new project focused on the vitamin B3 derivative - a popular "medicine for old age" called nicotinamide riboside (nicotinamide riboside).

Employees of the Laboratory of Molecular Gerontology at the National Institute of Aging under the direction of Dr. Vilhelm Bohr (Vilhelm Bohr) found that nicotinamide ribozide improves the ability of neurons to repair damaged DNA.

As the authors explain, the violation of DNA repair in brain neurons leads to dysfunction of cellular mitochondria - organelles that produce energy. Deficiency of energy, in turn, initiates neurodegeneration processes, the signs of which we observe in everyday life (memory, logic, thinking, etc..
