The next step will be testing the health of the program during clinical trials.

A new technology of augmented reality will allow doctors to look under the skin of patients without resorting to the help of a scalpel. ProjectDR imposes CT imaging and MRI data on the patient's body, even if it moves.

"We wanted to create a system that would show the physicians the internal anatomy of the patient in the context of his body," says Ian Watts, a graduate of the Canadian University of Alberta (Canada) and developer of the ProjectDR system.

The kit includes a motion tracking system, infrared cameras and an overlay projector. But the most difficult, according to Watts, is to accurately place a picture on the patient's body, even if it changes position and moves. To do this, Watts had to write a special program that combined all the components together.

ProjectDR also allows you to show individual internal organs, for example, only the lungs or only blood vessels - depending on what is required to see the doctors. Now Watts is working on optimizing the automatic calibration system and adding depth sensors. The next step will be testing the health of the program during clinical trials.

"Soon, we will start using ProjectDR in the operational laboratory of surgical simulations to test the shortcomings and advantages in real conditions," says Professor Pierre Boulanger.

Also, the developers will conduct pilot studies of the suitability of this system for teaching manual and physical therapy procedures, reports EurekAlert.

A similar idea was realized by the developers of the Augmented Reality Platform Holographic Navigation Platform. With the MS HoloLens AR-glasses technology allows surgeons to impose an additional informative layer, getting data on the patient's vital signs. You can manage images using gestures.
