In recent years, there has been a significant increase in interest in non-medicamentous methods of treating diseases, including curative fasting. Therapeutic fasting is usually called unloading-dietary therapy (RDT), since this method of treatment includes not only fasting (unloading), but also a recovery period, which is perhaps the most difficult for both the patient and the doctor.

Therapeutic starvation was known in ancient times, it is mentioned in the works of scientists of Egypt, India, China, Tibet, Scandinavia, Rome. Famous thinkers, scientists Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato used systematic starvation to improve mental performance and enhance creativity.

Therapeutic starvation prescribed to his patients Avicenna. Hippocrates said: "A person wears a doctor in himself, one must only be able to help him in his work. If the body is not cleaned, then the more you feed it, the more you will harm it. When the patient is fed too much, the disease is also fed. Remember - every surplus is contrary to nature ".

In the last century, many scientists in various countries studied the physiological effect of starvation. One of the founders of this method, Doctor E. Dewey, treated with dosed starvation of the disease of the gastrointestinal tract, obesity, depression, etc.. His disciple and follower L. Batfield Hazard wrote the popular book "Hunger is a cure for disease". She supplemented Dewey's technique using cleansing enemas, water procedures, massage, gymnastics, recommended a vegetarian diet after hunger treatment.

For a long time, the proponents of starvation were the writer E. Sinclair, publisher A. Suvorin, other prominent figures of art, literature, scientists. The curative starvation was widely spread in the twentieth century. , when in medicine arose the so-called reformist movement, which paid much attention to natural methods of therapy.

In 1914 year. the book F. Zegessera "Therapeutic starvation". Among the scientists involved in the problems of RDT, one can name a prominent pathophysiologist, rector of the Military Medical Academy in St. Petersburg. Pashutin, the French doctor AND. Vivini - the author of the sensational book "The treatment of starvation and natural methods". Vivini successfully applied prolonged fasting with diseases of the cardiovascular system, liver, bronchial asthma, allergic diseases.

In recent years, interest in curative starvation in our country has increased. Monographs, manuals for doctors, methodical recommendations, collections of scientific works are published, results of researches in candidate's and doctor's dissertations are generalized. In 1988 the. reissued book Yu. Nikolaev, V. Nilova, In. Cherkasova "Starvation for Health", which sets out his own experience of using this method of treatment.

However, in practical medicine and in scientific circles one can meet sharply opposite views on curative fasting. In the polemic, two tendencies can be clearly traced. Opponents of curative fasting consider this method of treatment not physiological, leading to serious biochemical shifts in the body, associated with changes in metabolism. Supporters and propagandists of the method consider it universal, not bringing undesirable consequences to the human body.

Our experience allows us to consider therapeutic starvation effective in the treatment of diseases such as obesity, bronchial asthma, hypertension, psoriasis, neurodermatitis, etc..

The method promotes the regression of sexual disorders, and often also the restoration of potency in men, the normalization of the menstrual cycle in women.

After a course of therapeutic starvation, patients show an increase in energy, mobility and balance of nervous processes improve. However, therapeutic starvation, in our opinion, is not a panacea for all diseases, it is contraindicated for some patients. In connection with the possibility of developing complications, medical starvation should be performed only in a hospital under the supervision of a specially trained physician.
