Elderly people are often recommended to take vitamin B12. But is it really necessary? A new study showed who needs vitamin supplements, and for whom their use will be useless.

"Many people regularly take vitamin B12 to improve the functioning of the body. However, our study showed no benefit to the nervous system and cognitive function after 12 months of supplementation among people with moderate vitamin B12 deficiency, "said study leader Dr. Alan Dangour from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. In other words, vitamin intake helps only those who have a strong deficit of substance, and for other people this measure may be useless.

The study involved 200 people over the age of 75 with a deficiency of vitamin B12.

During the year they took either supplements with a vitamin, or a placebo.

For those with a deficiency of vitamin B12 expressed strongly, taking supplements helps reduce the risk of muscle weakness, fatigue, depression, memory impairment and thinking process.

"We recommend everyone who cares about their health, eat a variety of healthy food, train your brain and exercise regularly," - the scientists recommended. In-kind vitamin B12 is found in fish, meat, chicken and dairy products.
