A new study shows that an extract of old garlic can reduce the dangerous accumulation of plaque in the arteries. The additive can help prevent the progression of atherosclerosis and heart disease. Old garlic extract can reduce the accumulation of deadly plaques in the arteries and prevent the progression of heart disease, according to a new study planned for publication in the journal Nutrition.
The results of a study in the BioMed laboratory found a decrease in the size and density of cholesterol plaques in the arteries of patients with a metabolic syndrome who took an extract of old garlic. Metabolic syndrome is characterized by obesity, hypertension and other risk factors for cardiovascular disease.
"Our study is another confirmation of the benefits of garlic in reducing the level of plaque in the arteries resembling dental plaque and preventing the formation of new plaques that can lead to heart disease," said Matthew J. Badoff, MD, a leading researcher at the BioMed laboratory. "We completed four randomized studies and they led us to the conclusion that extract of old garlic can help slow the progression of atherosclerosis and reverse the early stages of heart disease. "The study involved 55 patients, from 40 to 75 years who were diagnosed with a metabolic syndrome. All participants were screened at the beginning of the study to measure the total volume of coronary plaque, as well as the density of plaque calcification. The study was conducted using cardiac CT angiography, a non-invasive imaging technology that accurately measures the concentration of calcium in the coronary arteries and the accumulation of cholesterol plaques in the arteries.
After assessing the condition of the arteries, study participants consumed every day or placebo, or a dose of 2400 mg of an extract of old garlic. Subsequent measurements a year after the initial "measurement" showed that those who took the extract of old garlic, 80% slowed the overall accumulation of plaque and noted a decrease in soft, noncalcenated deposits.
Scientists plan to conduct additional studies to see if garlic extract is able to stabilize the vulnerability of arteries and reduce the risk of cardiovascular problems.
