If you want to lose weight, then you need to learn to eat in silence. This conclusion can be drawn from the results of experiments conducted by American scientists from the University of Brigham Young.
The researchers found that the sounds of chewing food can significantly affect how much you eat. Therefore, it is better to turn off the TV or loud music during the meal. Extraneous noise drowns out sounds produced by a person for snacking. Meanwhile, they help control the amount of food consumed.
"If people focus more on the sounds of chewing food, this can reduce the amount consumed," - says researcher Ryan Elder.
Scientists conducted three separate experiments. In one of them, scientists compared how much people ate when they listened to loud music or, conversely, ate in silence.
It turned out that the group that listened to music was more likely to lean on the offered treats. Its representatives ate 4 pretzels, while the "group of silence" - only 2.75 pretzels. The difference does not seem great, but if you eat in the proposed regime for a long time, then the effect can be summarized, say the researchers.
The results of the study are published in the journal Food Quality and Preference.
