Resveratrol, the legendary active substance of grapes and red wine, is recognized as a promising tool for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, the prevention of stroke and cancer, according to the Internet edition for girls and women aged 14 to 35 Pannochka. net Despite bright prospects, scientists still can not understand the mechanism of action of resveratrol and did not approach its application in clinical practice.

A few days ago a group of researchers from the University of Missouri (USA) announced that resveratrol affects the immune system in two opposite ways.

Conducted experiments with the blood of dogs not only did not give scientists the long-awaited answers, but also raised even more questions.

Lead author Sandra Axiak-Bechtel, a professor of oncology at the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Missouri, says: "This study revealed that resveratrol causes several complex and ambiguous changes in the immune system of dogs. If we could understand why these changes occur and then learn to control them, resveratrol would become a valuable therapeutic option for cancer and immune system diseases in humans and animals ".

During her experiments, Axiak-Bechtel and her colleagues added resveratrol to canine blood, while analyzing the state of immune cells. It turned out that under the influence of resveratrol, the leukocytes of dogs began to produce more pro-inflammatory cytokines and reduced the production of anti-inflammatory agents, which should strengthen the organism's struggle with infection. But on the other hand resveratrol reduced the ability of neutrophils to fight bacterial cells, and this should weaken the immune defense.

"The observed decrease in the activity of neutrophilic leukocytes means a loss of the body's ability to resist bacteria. Such an unexpected combination of two opposite effects is uniquely of great scientific interest. Now we have to understand how, in fact, resveratrol acts on the immune system. As soon as we understand this, we can open wide opportunities for the creation of drugs based on it, "the scientists concluded.
