New research has shown that adults and children, including the volume on its music players at maximum, change their behavior if they receive appropriate medical recommendation. Most of them in this case either make the music quieter, or they begin to apply protective means for the ears.

Scientists have found that most people follow the advice of doctors, and makes music quieter if the experts gave them a direct recommendation. About half of the respondents said they experienced uncomfortable symptoms, such as ringing in the ears and hearing loss, after listening to loud music, and 32% of the respondents consider their symptoms to be disturbing.

About 75% of respondents indicated that they own an MP3 player, and 24% confessed that they listen to the player for more than 15 hours a week. About half said that they listen to music at 75-100% of the maximum volume. Being surrounded by external noise, for example, in the metro or on the street with a busy traffic, 89% of respondents twist the volume in the players to a maximum.

Respondents also reported that the most informative source for the prevention of hearing loss is considered by the mass media, and the health care institutions ranked among the most valuable sources of information in the last place.

Nevertheless, the respondents said that they would change their habits in terms of listening to music if they received such a recommendation from a competent medical specialist.

"Partial hearing loss is so common that it has already become the norm," said the author of the study, Dr. Roland Ivi, head of the Department of Otolaryngology at Vanderbilt University. Scientists have found that, since the last research conducted in 2002, many people still do not know about the dangers of loud music. However, some progress in the level of awareness is present, mainly thanks to the media.
