A study conducted by scientists from Reading University showed that eating a food product like chocolate (cocoa) helps to reduce inflammation in the intestine.
Specialists have found that chocolate has a particular effect on the intestinal microflora.
The researchers conducted an experiment in which volunteers drank milk with a high concentration of cocoa for four weeks. During this time in their intestines, the levels of bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, which are related to humans.
According to physicians, the bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are involved in the activation of anti-inflammatory processes in the intestine, thereby maintaining its healthy state. It is symptomatic that earlier during studies on pigs, an increase in the levels of bacteria Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium in the intestine was also recorded after the animals were switched to food with a high cocoa content.
Also this time, scientists concluded that the components of cocoa contribute to a decrease in the number of bacteria Clostridium histolyticum, whose high content is an indicator of inflammatory bowel diseases.
"Chocolate can stimulate the development of the right bacteria and reduce inflammation in the intestine," the authors of the study.
Separately, experts noted that the cocoa useful for the intestine is not synonymous with chocolate. As experts have explained, chocolate bars often contain a large amount of sugar and fats, so the preference should be given to chocolate with the highest level of cocoa.
Previously, scientists have argued that chocolate should be a product of daily use.
