A new study revealed that most parents are not aware of the danger that snoring poses to the health of their children.

Meanwhile, snoring in a child is associated with problems such as lack of sleep, drowsiness during the day, reduced concentration, stunting.

This is stated in the edition of The Journal of Laryngology & Otology.

Employees of the University of Goteborg (Sweden) rush to reassure that in most cases, a rare episodic snoring in a child passes without any consequences. But in some cases, when snoring is permanent, the problem must be solved.

"Children who snore regularly in their sleep experience a decrease in the quality of life. Especially this applies to children who already have obstructive sleep apnea. This condition should be paid attention in due time, "wrote the author of the study Dr. Gunnhildur Gudnadottir from the Salgren Academy.

Recall that the syndrome of obstructive sleep apnea is associated with such diseases as hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, coronary heart disease, myocardial infarction, stroke, arrhythmias, obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Help with snoring gets only a third of children.

In the course of their research, Swedish scientists randomly selected 1320 children from the age of several months to 11 years in the national medical register.

Parents or guardians were asked to fill out questionnaires that indicated any sleep disorders in the child, as well as the fact of contacting the pediatrician or other doctor with these complaints.

Of the 754 children with these or other sleep disorders, only 5% snored several nights a week. And only every third child with this problem parents or guardians bothered to show to a specialist.

In the opinion of the researchers, this speaks of the blatant illiteracy of adults in this issue. Parents simply do not attach importance to baby snoring.

"Our research has unexpectedly revealed that parents who, as a rule, with the first unusual trifle sound alarm and rush to the clinic, for the most part calmly react to children's snoring, which should not be. This is a serious issue that needs to be publicized, "said Dr. Gudnadottir.

The researcher notes that the most common causes of snoring in children of this age are enlarged tonsils and adenoids, but there may be other causes.

Be that as it may, all this is eliminable with timely access to a doctor and competent examination of the child.
