Dr. Makarem and his colleagues presented their findings at the annual scientific meeting Experimental Biology 2016, which was held on Tuesday, April 5.
The study involved 3,100 volunteers who have been observed since the early 1990s. 99% of participants were of European origin. Dr. Makarem divided them into several categories depending on the quality of the carbohydrates consumed - the glycemic index and the glycemic load. Then the scientists calculated the incidence of cancer in each group.
After the introduction of multiple risk factors into the analysis, the authors concluded that high glycemic load is associated in 88% with an increased risk of prostate cancer. By the way, this is one of the most frequent types of cancer and the killer of men number 2 among all cancer diseases.
But the use of products with a low glycemic index, including non-starchy vegetables and fruits, reduces the risk of breast cancer in women by almost 67%. This emphasizes the role of natural products in the prevention of cancer and representatives of both sexes.
