Professor Ebisher's group tested the effects of urolithine A on Caenorhabditis elegans. These nematodes are a valuable model for studying human biology, because they are multicellular, their cells are very similar to ours, they grow rapidly, and develop from a fertilized egg.

Ebisher explains that at the age of 8-10 days these nematodes are already considered old, so the model is ideal for studying cell aging.

Here and in the last study C. Elegans under the action of small doses of urolitin A lived on average two weeks, which is 45% longer than their normal life expectancy.

Such a serious success was due to the fact that urolitin A prevents accumulation of dysfunctional (spent) mitochondria in the process of aging worms.

Under the influence of urolitin A, laboratory mice not only lived much longer than they were supposed to, but also at 2 years of age (mouse old age) showed a 42% better tolerance of exercise.

"All tests and tests confirmed that in mice, due to urolithin A, the utilization of mitochondria was accelerated, and cells were cleared of free radicals," say scientists.

Nematode C. Elegans and rodents are very far from each other evolutionarily, but on both species the unique substance has a beneficial effect.

This is a good sign. The authors believe that urolitin A is a universal recipe for youth, almost for all living creatures, including humans.

Grenades will not help everyone.

Although the results look simple and bright, using grenades is only one of the conditions of longevity. The fact is that the molecule of urolitin A is not contained in garnets.

They include a precursor molecule from the group ellagitannins - partially hydrolyzable tannins. When this substance is mixed with water, it is cleaved to ellagic acid - this is the next stage of production of urolyte A.

At the final stage, special intestinal bacteria.

Due to the very complex multistage synthesis and the participation of microorganisms, the amount of urolyte A produced in the body varies widely. In fact, some people may not have the right bacteria, so grenades are useless.
