American surgeons from Houston restored the left arm of the 8-month-old boy, successfully transplanting the nerves from his mother's legs. This is one of the first operations, when the transplanted nerves were taken from a living donor. Usually in the US, nerves were taken from the corpse.

Eight-month-old Mexican Rodrigo Cervantes Crown was born with a congenital malformation: the nerves in his left arm and shoulder were torn, so the hand almost did not move and felt nothing. Such a defect in the US occurs in one or two of thousands of newborns. During the operation, Rodrigo's mother, 24-year-old Patricia Crown Montez, removed about 100 cm of nerves from the back of both legs.

As a result, she partially lost her sensitiveness, but doctors regard this as not too serious a violation. Rodrigo put under the skin on the right side of the body the nerves of the mother, carried them around the chest and brought to the left shoulder and left hand.

As the doctors say, the nerves transplanted to the boy from his mother will not become his nerves. Over time, the healthy nerves on the right side of Rodrigo's body will sprout into the left side of the body, and the mother's nerves should serve as conductors. Surgeons believe that within a year the boy will learn to work with his left hand, and then it will be possible to talk about the complete success of the operation.
