Henceforth, an antibacterial soap containing any of the 19 popular active ingredients, including triclosan and triclocarban, will not be sold in the US for household use.

The antiseptics listed in the new order can now be used only as part of special hand treatment fluids (sanitizers) or alcohol wipes.

The radical decision of the FDA's expert committee is due to the lack of scientific evidence of their effectiveness in preventing infections compared to conventional cosmetic soaps, as well as inadequate safety data for consumers with prolonged use.

Some of the soap components that are banned in the US are listed below:.

Secondary amyl tricresols.

Hexachlorophene.

Hexylresorcinol.

Iodine-polymer complexes.

Cloflucarban.

Methylbenzethonium chloride.

Sodium oxychlorene.

Tribromsalan.

Triclosan.

10. Triklokarban.

eleven. Fluorosalan 12. Phenol and others.

"Consumers may think that antibacterial soap is more effective than usual for preventing the spread of microbes, but there is no evidence of this. In addition to this, there are doubts about the safety of these substances with long-term use, "said Dr. Janet Woodlock, director of the Center for the Study and Evaluation of Medicines FDA.

The decision of the FDA, oddly enough, did not become a thunder out of the blue for American manufacturers. Back in 2013, the agency required companies to provide additional data on the effectiveness and safety of all 19 substances banned today.

Since no adequate information was received for three years, it was decided to ban the introduction of the listed components into the so-called antibacterial soap.

If the data are finally provided, then these substances can be GRSE (Generally Recognized as Safe and Effective), and the ban on their use will be canceled.

In the meantime, local manufacturers of cosmetics have been given a year to completely remove substances with unproved efficiency and safety from the composition of products. Companies that produce products based on benzalkonium chloride, benzethonium chloride and chlorooxylene are given a year to provide new data on efficacy and safety.
