In France, one of the highest in the world indicator of drug consumption per capita, and in the country's pharmacies there is a wide range of drugs for treating any diseases. However, the difficult economic situation in recent years has affected all sectors of the economy, including the country's pharmacy business.
The long way of French pharmaceuticals.
The history of French pharmacy has many centuries. At the beginning of the last millennium, monks were engaged in the treatment of people, and in the 16th century the first pharmaceutical department in Europe was opened at the University of Montpellier, founded by the pharmacist and pharmacy owner Professor G. Rondele. Since 1558, this department began to read a course of lectures for pharmacists. At the beginning of the 17th century, the departments of surgery and pharmacy, pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical chemistry appeared at the university, and graduates of this university received certificates from the master of pharmacy, which were appreciated in the countries of Europe.
The next important date in the development of the French pharmacy business was in 1777, when the first pharmaceutical college opened in France, combining the professional, scientific, social and economic concept of pharmacy.
In 1803, France adopted the first legislative act in the history of the country regulating various aspects of pharmacy business at the state level. Despite all the imperfections, the law of 1803 marked the beginning of a new era of French pharmaceuticals: on the basis of this law, six pharmaceutical schools were opened in the country. The same law introduced for pharmacists certain restrictions: prohibited to give secrets to the manufacture of medicinal potions to strangers and prohibited to manufacture and sell drugs to persons who did not receive training and did not have an approved qualification.
Today the French pharmaceutical industry is the strategic sector of the country's economy. It makes a significant contribution to the employment indicators of the population and the trade balance of the country. The main pharmaceutical companies in the country are Servier, Sanofi, Pierre Fabre. Among all branches of the French economy, the pharmaceutical industry ranks third in investment in research and development and second place in exports:
in 2016, the volume of pharmaceutical exports amounted to 25.4 billion euros.
All pharmaceutical activities in France are controlled by the state and regulated by the Code of Health (Code de la sant publique) and a number of other documents. To carry out pharmaceutical activities, any individual or legal entity must obtain permission from the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Medical Products, and to open a pharmacy it is necessary to obtain a license.
