Scientists from the University of Rockefeller, together with researchers from the Howard Huge Institute, discovered a signal molecule that enhances and inhibits the activity of the main genes of the skin papilla - a special type of skin cells, a unique collection of proteins that gives precise instructions to the epithelial table cells in relation to hair creation, ua. org.

The results of the study will be published in the journal Genes & Development. Scientists described in detail the process of "negotiation" between these two types of cells. It was also considered, what importance does this signal molecule - the protein called BMP - in the negotiation process.

Table cells of the epithelium are located in the upper part of the adult hair follicle. The dermal papillae, in turn, are located side by side in the mesenchyme layer, beneath them. Obviously, the signals of communication between these two types of cells represent a kind of coaching for table cells, aimed at the formation of follicles during the development of the embryo. Later, when the follicles reached the required level of development, the signals lead to the control of growth and regeneration of the hair.

"Scientists do not know how the dermal papilla is programmed to provide signaling to table cells, but now we know that BMP signals play an important role in this process," said Dr.

Michael Rendle, head of the research project.

In the course of the analysis, scientists found that almost all of the signature proteins that were examined in the cells of the dermal papillae decreased quantitatively when the BMP receptor. The new information indicates that the dermal papillae receive BMP signals from their environment, and these signals are the basis for ensuring a conversation between the types of cells being examined.
