Biotechnology company BTG has begun research on the effectiveness of the drug against the syndrome of obstructive sleep apotheosis, in which patients complain of snoring. Scientists suggest that the frequency of symptoms of this disorder will decrease with taking just one tablet of a new drug per day.

In the syndrome of obstructive sleep apnea (OSAS), narrowing of the lumen of the upper respiratory tract occurs due to natural muscle relaxation. This leads to a periodic difficulty in breathing, a decrease in the oxygen content in the blood, and as a result, morning headache, a sense of weakness and lack of sleep in patients and their loved ones. The study drug, codenamed BGC20-0166, is a combination of two already existing drugs. The mechanism of action of each of them is different, but both drugs change signal transmission in certain centers of the brain responsible for muscle tone and respiratory tract.

The study included 39 patients. All participants were divided into groups whose appointments were different: one of the two registered drugs, their combination of BGC20-0166 in two different dosages or placebo. To evaluate the effectiveness of treatment has been used so-called index of apnea / hypopnea index, which was measured at 14 and 28 days from the start of the study.

In the group of patients who received a large dose of BGC20-0166, symptoms of OSAS decreased by an average of 40%, and in three of the ten participants in this group, the incidence of snoring episodes decreased by 50%, which is regarded as a good result of treatment.

At present, severe forms of OSAS are treated with the help of special oxygen masks that create a prolonged positive pressure in the airways. The new drug is unlikely to replace this technique, however, as the developers hope, it will be an effective method for treating moderate to severe OSAS.
